Sophie Burling
Sophie is a molecular biologist with a PhD in biochemistry, specialising in translational research and the application of advanced molecular biotechnologies. She founded Geminae, an early-stage MedTech venture developing a cell-based patient-specific drug discovery platform for neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. She also founded and operates Maverick Sport Horses, a high-performance equine breeding business with expertise in assisted reproductive technologies, and has extensive experience in the rural sector, combining scientific rigour with entrepreneurial vision. Sophie has worked in venture capital, providing technical insight and strategic guidance to deep tech startups, and was a Fulbright Scholar at MIT, exploring the interface between biotechnology, diagnostics, and innovation. She currently chairs Manawatu Momentum, supporting regional entrepreneurial growth. Outside of science and business, Sophie is a licensed pilot, enjoys boating, and is an avid hiker.
